Dorm House The dorm house is a beautiful 15 room two-story building with hardwood floors upstairs and cool terracotta tile downstairs. Constructed with glass blocks and skylights designed to fill the building with natural sunlight and open-air ventilation to keep it cooler on warm days. Each room is equipped with screened windows, bunk beds/Thai floor mats, sheets and a pillow. Mosquito nets are not necessary. The rooms can get warm in the summer months and very cold at night in the winter months. During the winter months a winter weight sleeping bag, heavy comforter, or equivalent is essential. Depending on the number of people visiting the center during your stay you may have to share a room with one to four other people. Dorm residents are responsible for keeping their dorm room clean and for washing the bed linens before leaving.
Bamboo Huts For more rustic accommodations there are several bamboo huts located at the south end of the property. Each hut has a beautiful view of the nearby forest and ponds. They are simple one-roomed huts that sit above the ground on short stilts. Sleeping mat, bedding, flashlight and mosquito net are not supplied and should be brought with you. The huts are located approximately 350 meters from the centers main community area containing the dining hall, bathhouse etc. The walk down to the huts may be difficult for those with any disabilities. There is no electricity, nor any bathroom facilities located at the huts. Depending on the number of guests at the center the huts may be shared.
Solo Retreat Cabins There are 4 cabins designed for those desiring a solo retreat. The cabins are beautifully constructed from local wood. Each has a magnificent view of the nearby ponds and mountains in the distance. Glass windows frame the entrances providing each cabin with natural light. The cabins provide a wonderful space for meditation, yoga asana, prostrations or practices of any kind. Each has a small outside deck area designed for sky gazing, non-conceptual meditation and yoga asana as well. There is neither electricity nor any bathroom facilities in the cabins. Mattress, sheets and pillow are provided. Solo retreat cabins are not shared.
The cabins are reserved for serious retreatants doing a solo retreat only. Solo retreat guidelines must be followed: no interaction with others is permitted for the entire length of the retreat (excluding arraigned meetings with the Acarya or with a KA instructor). The communal bathroom and shower facilities may be used but dining hall, dorm house and training hall may only be used if it is deemed essential to your retreat by the Acarya. Meals will be delivered to each cabin 3 times per day.
Tenting There are several areas on the land designated for tenting. Camping equipment such as tents, mattresses, bedding, flashlights, etc. are not provided and should be brought with you. Please check to see what kind of weather is expected and plan accordingly. Quiet Hours Quiet hours are to be observed on KA premises nightly between 8pm and 7am. In the dorm house one must pay special attention and refrain from chanting, bell ringing, pranayama, talking above a whisper, etc. as the sound carries easily through the open spaces of the dorm. Training Hall/Temple Kailash Akhara is the home of Southeast Asia’s largest Yoga training hall and temple – The Mahasiddha Mahabodhi temple (Great Awakening Temple of the Yoga Adepts). The temple has a 4,575 square foot teak practice floor surrounded by a 2,336 square foot walking meditation deck, 30-foot ceilings and is open on three sides giving spectacular mountain and forest views. Outside of scheduled programs the training hall may be used for personal yoga, meditation or study sessions.
Dining Hall Meals are served in the dining hall three times per day. You will be informed of the current meal times upon your arrival. It is helpful if guests arrive on time for all scheduled meals. Please ask before taking seconds. In between meals you may help yourself to tea, coffee and a seasonal choice of fruit.
Bath House The bathhouse consists of 3 communal shower blocks and 4 individual shower stalls. During certain retreats the communal blocks are separated by gender. Warm and cold water showers are available. Warm water is heated by the sun and is available most days from 11am – 5pm. Cold water sinks, counters and mirrors are located outside of the shower blocks. Towels, bathroom shoes, soap and other toiletries are not provided.
Laundry You are responsible for doing your own laundry and bed linens. Laundry basin, detergent, scrubbing brushes, clothesline and pins are provided. Toilets Composting toilets are located in the building next to the bathhouse. Before using the compost toilets please make sure to receive proper instructions from a Kailash Akhara staff member.
Store A small selection of toiletries, batteries, pens, blank notebooks, tissues, malas (meditation beads for counting mantra and for wearing), and other items may be purchased from the Kailash Akhara store. Meals Kailash Akhara offers regional Thai cuisine made with local and fresh ingredients, some of which are produced on our own organic permaculture farm. Our wonderful Thai cooks prepare our healthy and tasty meals in the Kailash Akhara kitchen. We never use MSG or processed cooking oils. Chili is used on occasion in small amounts. Please inform us of any dietary restrictions before your arrival. We may not be able to accommodate all dietary needs. Volunteer Hours Seva (self-less service). A KA administrator will go over your personal seva duties with you and show you the correct manner in which to perform your tasks. Weather: Thailand in General Thailand has three seasons; Rainy (May – Oct) peaking usually around September and October, Hot-with cool nights (Nov-Feb), and Very Hot (March – May). Weather: Local Area The weather at the center varies greatly depending on the season. Our local weather is often different than the weather in the rest of the country. February to April at Kailash Akhara is very hot and dry. It can get very hot during the days and will usually remain warm at night. Temperatures at this time can reach to 40ºC/105ºF. Expect high humidity in the wet season from April to October. During these months the temperatures remain hot with bursts of warm rain and at times high winds. April is usually the hottest month gradually decreasing in temperature until October. Winter weather, November to February, can vary greatly from day to night. During these months the land is dry with nearly zero humidity. Daytime temperatures also vary. You may experience temperatures ranging from the mid 30’s(C)/90’s(F) on sunny days to low 15’s(C)/60’s(F) on overcast days. The temperature can sometimes drop down to 0º(C)/32º(F) at night and early mornings. |
